France is Turning ‘Bleu Marine’ the Existential C

France is turning “bleu-Marine”, a play on words which refers to the National Front (FN)’s strong ‎showing in the first round of the French Presidential elections. 18% of the vote is the strongest ‎polling yet for Marine Le Pen’s party, out-doing even her father’s 16.9% in the 2002 elections, ‎where he made it to the second round. The success of the National Front was in stark contrast to ‎the poor showing of France’s Right. Sarkozy has the dubious privilege of being the Fifth Republic’s ‎most unpopular president, with a 64% disapproval rating, and the first incumbent not to take the ‎lead in the first round. But these sobering findings clearly hadn’t dented the President’s self-belief on sunday as he delivered a “victory” speech, in which he claimed his supporters had ‘proven the ‎polls wrong’ – despite the rather accurate predictions that he’d lose out to Holland in the first ‎round, with around 26% of the vote. Which he did. ‎

His hope now will be to galvanise the Far-right and Centrist votes to compete with the Leftist block, ‎totalling 41% Windows Anytime Upgrade, which gives the socialist candidate, Francois Hollande a solid basis on which to achieve the winning 54% Where to buy windows 7 key, predicted by ‎an IPSOS poll in the second round.‎

As Sarkozy seeks to salvage the situation in the run up to May 6th, his Sunday speech offered a ‎glimpse of things to come as he focused on key National Front issues of immigration, border ‎controls and national identity. In recent years, the UMP has been split by its veer to the right under ‎the direction of Sarkozy’s adviser, Patrick Buisson, considered the architect of the UMP’s “LePen-‎isation”. Many blame the strategy for alienating traditional right-wing voters and changing the very ‎nature of the neo-Gaulliste party. Others see Le Pen’s success as a vindication and evidence of the ‎need to move further on this terrain. The fact Sarkozy can count on 60% of Le Pen’s votes in the ‎second round, poses some existential questions about the very nature of the Right in France.‎

A regional breakdown of the vote showed Le Pen achieved high scores in the industrial North Est, ‎where she often came second, behind the Left for whom the North is not traditional terrain and ‎where Sarkozy had scored highly in 2007. The North Est and France’s industrial regions were those ‎worst hit by the economic crisis in 2008-2009, with a significant increase in unemployment. Today ‎jobless claims are at a twelve year high across France. In addition, France has lost competitiveness. ‎Its exports have lagged behind those of its major trading partners in the past decade, labour costs ‎have grown and whilst the economy is sluggish, workers are faced with reduced purchasing power. ‎This squeeze on the working class under the UMP’s rule means many are looking elsewhere. The ‎breakdown of votes shows Sarkozy lost many seats in central France, the 6th largest industrial ‎region, where the Far Left made significant advances and 29% of Blue-collar workers now vote Le ‎Pen.‎

But the Far-Right has also benefited from Sarkozy’s tactical inclusion of Far-right themes into the ‎mainstream political discourse. Many of Sarkozy’s election pledges seemingly acknowledged the ‎problematisation of issues raised by the FN, including the halal meat saga and the proposed rethink ‎of the passport-free Schengen zone. This strategy assumed the incorporation of such issues into ‎the UMP’s agenda, could garner more votes away from the NF, but appears instead to have ‎legitimised Le Pen’s discourse and ensured the perennity of her party on the French political ‎scene. What’s more, Sarkozy’s perceived failure to address these issues, alongside his ‎acknowledgement of their importance, has bolstered the FN’s agenda.‎

Marine Len Pen’s speech on Sunday suggests she now views her party as the ‘true’ Right, in the ‎face of a weak and discredited UMP. What is certain is that her historic success in this first round ‎has shifted the political terrain in France and conveyed a degree of respectability she has worked ‎hard to foster. Since taking over from her father, Marine has morphed the party’s image, seeking ‎to distance it from its racist reputation and consolidating its platform through a solidly anti-EU ‎focus, broadening its appeal. The message of curbing immigration and combating a European elite ‎by taking France out of the Eurozone, is designed to protect an allegedly threatened French ‎identity. ‎

Alongside proposals to protect small businesses and ban supermarkets in towns of under 30 000 ‎people, she speaks to a France suspicious of globalisation and of the EU’s austerity plans, in a ‎country where only 31% of people agree that a free market economy is the best system. It is ‎amongst the squeezed working and middle classes, who feel that Europe is failing to protect them ‎against global competition, that her message of protectionism, both social and economic, has ‎found an audience. ‎

Last year, academics warned of the “France of the invisibles” where almost 40% of the electorate ‎in rural and suburban areas, as well as in towns hit by deindustrialisation, feel abandoned by the ‎democratic process and unrepresented in their concerns. The consequence is the emergence of a ‎more radical political vote, towards the Far-Left but more so towards the Far Right whose ‎combination of a focus on social and identity issues has broad appeal. Worryingly, this is no longer ‎perceived to be a protest vote, but a vote of adherence to the FN’s agenda. 64% of FN voters state ‎their support for Marine le Pen as a candidate, and only 36% describe theirs as a “protest vote”. ‎Amongst FN voters, immigration polls as the highest concern (62 %), followed by insecurity (44 %) ‎and purchasing power (43 %) and Le Pen has successfully taped into this combination of social and ‎economic conservativism.

While Hollande may be elected France’s first Socialist president in 17 ‎years Windows 7 Serial, it was under another socialist, Francois Mitterand that the National Front first made ‎headways in response to austerity measures in the 1980s. In 2012, their presence is far more ‎entrenched and they’ll be facing a candidate whom only 25 % of voters believe can improve the ‎situations in France. If he fails, an emboldened Far-right is waiting in the wings.‎

Boeing debuts first 787 Dreamliner made in South C

CHARLESTON Handmade Tattoo Machine, South Carolina, Apr. 27 Tattoo Kits Wholesale, 2012 (Reuters) — Boeing Co on Friday unveiled the first 787 Dreamliner made in its new South Carolina assembly plant, a factory at the center of a bitter labor dispute last year and the site of a recent manufacturing glitch that threatened to disrupt the 787 production rate target. A 787 Dreamliner passenger jet is being assembled at Boeing’s South Carolina facility in North Charleston, April 27, 2012. REUTERS/Mary Ann Chastain

The lightweight, sleek airplane rolled off the Charleston assembly line to the cheers of thousands of blue-shirted Boeing employees, local officials and news media.

Charleston is the second assembly line for the aircraft. The first line is in Everett, Washington. Boeing has delivered 11 Dreamliners from the Washington factory, but the airplane is three years behind its development schedule.

“What a great day for South Carolina. What a great day for Boeing The Best Tattoo Machine,” said Jim Albaugh, the Chief Executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“The 787 program has been very challenging and everyone knows that. This team has overcome obstacle after obstacle.”

The 787 Dreamliner is the first commercial airplane with an airframe made largely of carbon composites instead of aluminum. Because of its lighter weight, the plane consumes 20 percent less fuel than other planes its size on similar routes, savings that are prized by airline customers eager to tame soaring fuel bills.

Passenger comforts include large windows that allow passengers to see the horizon during flights, lighting that gradually changes to simulate the rising and setting sun, and mechanisms to dampen in-flight turbulence.

Boeing has taken more than 800 orders for the 787. The plane that emerged from the Charleston plant is bound for Air India.

Boeing, which aims to make 10 787s per month by the end of 2013, will produce three planes each month in South Carolina. The current 787 production rate is 3.5 per month, and some experts doubt Boeing can hit the 10-a-month target on time.

Earlier this year, workmanship in South Carolina came under scrutiny when Boeing reported signs of “delamination” on the rear fuselage of some 787s made at the Charleston plant. Delamination occurs when stress causes layered composite materials to separate.

Boeing has said the problem may affect up to 55 planes, but that the error will not be repeated because the company has retrained the workers who made the mistake.

Boeing confirmed a $6 billion order for 777-300ER long-range passenger jets from China Eastern, first reported by Reuters on Thursday. The move came weeks after China’s third largest airline cancelled an order for 24 Dreamliners due to the development delays.

TURBULENT PATH

Friday’s celebration was an important milestone in the Dreamliner saga, which features the controversial outsourcing of design and manufacturing work.

As part of a sprawling global supply chain, South Carolina has been an important and sometimes weak link.

Problems and inefficiencies at plants owned by Boeing suppliers in South Carolina contributed to delays in the 787’s development. To help regain control of Dreamliner production, Boeing bought portions of the operations of two of its South Carolina partners in 2009.

The purchase of those two operations became the foundation for a $750 million expansion to build Boeing South Carolina.

“It has been pretty impressive how Boeing has got this whole operation together, and is now actually rolling out an aircraft from a factory that has never made a plane before,” said Rob Stallard, an aerospace analyst with RBC Capital.

Last year, South Carolina again was in the spotlight when the National Labor Relations Board complained in an administrative law court that Boeing’s decision to open a 787 wide-body assembly away from its Washington state home base was meant to punish the Washington’s union for past strikes.

The labor board later dropped the complaint after Boeing reached a deal with the International Association of Machinists to assemble its newest 737 narrowbody in Washington.

Local leaders, meanwhile, used the attention to promote South Carolina – a state unfriendly to unions – as an aerospace manufacturing hub. Several notable aerospace companies have operations in South Carolina including Boeing, Honeywell International and Lockheed Martin.

The plant employees 6,000 people and is expected to create more jobs in South Carolina.

“Up in Seattle, the leadership deals with the union. That’s how they negotiate with employees,” said Jack Jones, vice president and general manager of Boeing South Carolina. “Here we are developing a culture of trust and respect.”

Hackers plan attack on Russian government sites

MOSCOW (Reuters) – The activist hacker group Anonymous said on Friday it planned to attack Russian government websites in order to support opposition protests ahead of Vladimir Putin’s inauguration as president. Tattoo Inks

In an Internet video that went viral, the Russian arm of the group said on YouTube it would shut down the government’s main website on Sunday, when protesters plan to stage a million-strong march in central Moscow.

This would be followed by an attack on the prime minister’s website on Monday – the day of Putin’s inauguration – said the message, which included instructions on how Internet users could join in.

Putin convincingly won a six-year presidential term in March despite a wave of protests following a December parliamentary poll the opposition said was tarnished by large-scale voting fraud in support of his party.

The mass rallies in Moscow and other Russian cities did not stop Putin returning to the presidency but they did strip the ex-KGB chief of the aura of invincibility that has characterized his 12-year rule, first as president then as prime minister.

“On the 6th of May Tattoos Kits, there will be mass demonstrations against the illegitimate elections. We will support this protest by shutting down the lying government’s sites,” Anonymous said in the YouTube message.

“If you did not elect these authorities and you are against a self-elected president crowning himself for a third time, join us.”

It said it would launch attacks on the Russian government website Government.ru at 1200 GMT on May 6 and on the prime minister’s website Premier.gov.ru on May 7 at 0900 GMT.

Anonymous hacked into the emails of a pro-Kremlin youth organization earlier this year, in what it said was a response to a growing number of hacker attacks by pro-government groups on independent news outlets and opposition bloggers.

Both sides are turning to increasingly accessible technology that can be used for hacking to find more and more people willing and able to carry out cyber attacks, according to a recent report from Britain-based human rights advocacy website OpenDemocracy.

Moscow has called for a globally binding U.N. treaty on cyber security to crack down on Web crime.

Western countries have balked at the proposal but highly-publicized attacks by hacker groups Anonymous and LulzSec Tattoo Supply, including against U.S. and British government websites, have highlighted the Internet’s vulnerabilities.

Regulators put together contract, set price for Do

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine regulators on Tuesday put three utilities on the path to distribute electricity harnessed from tides at the nation’s eastern tip, a key milestone in a bid to turn the natural rise and fall of ocean levels into power.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission set terms for a contract that would be in place for 20 years. The regulators also directed the three utilities to negotiate with Ocean Renewable Power Co. to put electricity onto the grid this summer, the first long-term power purchase agreements for tidal energy in the United States.

“It’s a landmark in the commercialization of tidal energy in the U.S.,” Chris Sauer, president and CEO of the Portland-based company Cheap Christian Audigier Clothes, told The Associated Press.

Ocean Renewable intends to install its first underwater turbine unit this summer on Cobscook Bay under a demonstration project.

Power production will begin modestly, with the first unit producing enough electricity for 20 to 25 homes; the pilot program calls for additional units at sites off both Lubec and Eastport to bring production to 4 megawatts, enough to power up more than 1,000 homes by 2016.

All told, the company sees up to 50 megawatts of tidal power potential off Lubec and Eastport, home to one of the world’s best tidal sites, where the tide rises and falls 20 feet twice a day.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission established what’s called a contract term sheet for the project. It sets the rate to be paid for the tide-generated electricity at 21.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, a subsidized rate that’s far higher than the standard offer of about 11 to 12 cents paid by most Maine residents.

Central Maine Power Discount DKNY Clothing, Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. and Maine Public Service Co. will negotiate a contract with Ocean Renewable under the framework established by regulators.

Richard Davies, Maine’s public advocate, said there were some mixed emotions over setting a rate that’s so much higher than the current cost of electricity.

But Davies and his staff came down in support of the project because the cost of energy produced by fossil fuels likely will grow much faster than the cost of tidal energy over the course of the 20-year contract. In fact, he said, the energy could become competitive within five years.

The 21.5-cent rate, which grows 2 percent a year over the contract, makes the project feasible, Sauer said. It’ll be subsidized through a previously established state fund.

Ocean Renewable’s Maine Tidal Energy Project is one of two tidal programs to receive pilot project licenses earlier this year from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The other company, Verdant Power, is working to advance its own tidal energy system in New York City’s East River.

Verdant’s design looks a lot like a wind turbine, only it’s underwater. Ocean Renewable uses rotating foils that lend the appearance of a manual reel mower for cutting grass.

Officials in Canada are watching the Maine project with interest. Ocean Renewable and Nova Scotia-based Fundy Tidal Inc. hope to install the same units in waters off Nova Scotia, where Bay of Fundy offers even greater tidal power potential, officials have said.

Volvo COO sees company’s less eye-catching lineup

For years Tattoo Supplies, Volvo has been pushing harder and harder to attract buyers of rival luxury automakers like BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz by slowly ditching its stodgy, safe and reliable reputation in favor of a more premium, upmarket marketing position. Now that money around the world is getting tighter Tattoo Supplies, even those who can afford to shop in the fancy European section may be looking for a good deal.

Volvo’s Chief Operating Officer Stephen Armstrong believes Volvo’s lack of flashiness makes it more “socially acceptable” and might be perfect for today’s market, saying, “We have a real opportunity for Volvo with respect to premium positioning. As people cut back, it becomes a little less acceptable to flaunt your money.”

That’s all fine and dandy, but the fact remains that Volvo is currently faring at least as poorly as its competitors in these times of financial uncertainty. We’ll just have to wait and see how the introduction of the new XC60, along with the presence of possible Chinese bidders for the brand, changes things over the next few months.
